Pain is a privilege. There, I said it. Running is painful. Relationships are painful. Life is painful. But the alternative is worse.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I knocked out a hilly 10-mile run today. It was my longest run in a long time and probably my hilliest run ever. There were moments I wanted to give up. But, just like life, there were moments that I felt invincible.
🏃🏼‍♀️
10 hilly miles give a person a lot of time to think. About anything. And everything. And I came to the realization that I don’t really appreciate the things that are most important to me. I don’t appreciate my athletic ability, my loving partner, or my fulfilling career. I tend to dwell on the challenges, the negatives, and the pain.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I’m not sure I can change this. But like other challenges I’ve faced in life, awareness is the first step.

How have you left your mark on this world? How WILL you leave your mark on this world? Are you a giver or a taker? A teacher? A philanthropist? An artist? A problem-solver? Do you blend in or stand out?

I love graffiti. I’m drawn to the artistry and color. I appreciate the message. I hear the voices expressing themselves in the best way they know how. At once, I feel the beauty and destruction, passion, joy, pain, and desperation.

There’s a tunnel connecting the beach near Monterey with the local university (currently closed due to COVID-19) and the long-abandonded buildings of the former Ft. Ord military complex. This graffiti covers the walls of the underpass, transporting you from the wildness of the ocean and sand dunes and ice plants to the stark reality of decaying buildings with broken windows and another solid dose of graffiti on the buildings and roads.

While I’ve never sprayed a can of paint on a wall or in a tunnel, I like to think I’ve left my mark on this world. I’ve helped build trails. I’ve taught thousands of individuals how to ride and race their bicycles. I’ve volunteered in my communities. I’ve supported those in need. Will I be remembered for any of this? Or should I pick up a can of paint to mark my legacy?

Running is hard. Actually, all exercise is hard,

Running is hard. Actually, all exercise is hard, at least for the first 10 minutes or so. I’ve learned that as an adult athlete, but maybe that’s why I never enjoyed exercise as a kid. You see, when you start any type of exercise, it takes your body a while to warm up and settle into your pace. I remember learning to ski in my 20s, and the first run was always painful. But after that first run, I could spend the entire day blissfully swooshing down the mountain.

As an adult athlete and a coach, I’ve learned that it takes some time for our body to warm up. I think this is even more true in my 50s. So I always try to ease into it by doing some dynamic stretching, walking, and then I start my run. Even so, the first 10 minutes are excruciating. I have to summon all my mental toughness to keep going. I have to remind myself that it will all feel better after the first mile or so. And most days, it does.

Today was one of those days. I headed out, hated life for about 10 minutes, and then went on to PR on my new 4-mile hilly loop. I guess that old adage “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” is probably true. Keep going. Keep moving. Ignore the pain. Or embrace the pain. Just know that, if you keep moving, you’ll find your rhythm and joyfully swoosh down the mountain, or stride along the trail or pedal up the hill.

Today is a very good day. 9 years ago, I made the decision to break up with alcohol. My relationship with alcohol was the longest relationship of my life. I’d never had a friend or boyfriend that long (probably due to my drinking). While saying goodbye to alcohol sounds like a noble decision, the reality is that I’d hit rock bottom. After decades of addiction, it was no longer my decision. It was time. I either needed to quit or give up on life. I’m pretty certain I would not be here today had I not made this choice.

Living alcohol free has improved every aspect of my life: my health, my fitness, my business, and my relationships. I’m so thankful I made this choice.
🏃🏼‍♀️
So today, I knocked out a 10K to honor my decision. It was just enough challenge to remind me that I can do hard things. I don’t need to numb myself. I can feel pain and joy and happiness. I can struggle without giving up. I can succeed. I can thrive. You can, too.

Consistency. It’s everything. It’s more than everything. It’s all there is. As a coach, I tell my athletes to show up and do the work. Trust the science. Be consistent. Be methodical. The results will come.

Show up. Do the work. But how can walking in the forest be the work? Who knew that my daily walks, up and down the hills of Skyline Forest, would allow me to regain fitness so quickly. Two weeks ago I could barely walk these hills. I was completely out of breath and sore when I’d finish. But I kept at it, walking longer and longer distances with more elevation gain. Last week I started feeling pretty good, so I threw in a few short running segments. Today, I was able to run 4 hilly miles non-stop at a pretty decent pace.

Much of the advice I share with my athletes is applicable, not only to sport, but to life, too.

I have a confession to make. Although I’ve ridden my bike in snow and ice and rain, slept on a glacier, snow camped, and bike packed through a swamp, I’m really a sunshine and blue skies kinda girl. I know, as long as I keep my body moving and wear the right clothing, weather is a non-issue. But still, I find it incredibly difficult to get my happy ass out the door on cold, wet mornings (like today). I also know that if I wait to workout after work, I probably won’t do it. But thanks to the #mermaidstreak I got out and did another run/walk in the forest this morning. And it was awesome.

2020! Am I right? What a year and the hits just

2020! Am I right? What a year and the hits just keep coming. We all know the pain. I’m trying to focus on the positives.

I’m back in school, studying physical therapy.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I have an amazing new bike fit studio and a new dynamic fit bike.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I accepted a super-fun job with @teamwilpers providing virtual Peloton fits.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I ran my first half marathon with @mermaidseries and more miles than I’ve ever run in a year.
🏃🏼‍♀️
We have a beautiful new playground in the forest.
🏃🏼‍♀️
I’m loved, I’m safe, and I’m healthy.
🏃🏼‍♀️
But the past 3 months have been pretty stressful. Rather than drop other balls, I let my fitness suffer. But I’m excited to be back with some cool goals for 2021. Rather than wait for the new year, I got out there today for my first run in 3 months. It was glorious. And it was completely different than what I’ve done in the past. I did a guided run workout with @mattwilpers on @onepeloton . It was a trail run. And it was hilly. That’s 3 firsts for me.

Congratulations, friends! We made it! I’m back. I’ve missed you all. Now, let’s hunker down and get through the next few months. WE GOT THIS!

Hello friends! It’s been a while. 2020 has bee

Hello friends! It’s been a while. 2020 has been a year, hasn’t it? Uncertainty is really difficult for me. I lost my voice. But I think I’ve rediscovered my voice.
🚲
Do you have a purpose? I have a purpose and it’s more clear than ever. For the past 20 years, my passion has been to empower others to improve their lives by riding a bicycle. It’s simple. It’s clear. It’s my everything.
🚲
How do I do this? I teach. I share. I communicate. And, even in these crazy times where were all learning to pivot to a new way of living and interacting, my passion is thriving.
🚲
I’ve been able to resume coaching bike skills clinics, and while the groups are smaller (by county health order), the stoke is bigger. I was able to move into a bigger, better bike fit studio, which also allows me to do things in new and different ways. And I’ve challenged myself with new projects: podcasts, and webcasts, and virtual speaking engagements, and video bike fitting. All in all, some exciting stuff right there.

So, while I’ve missed the old life I led, and it’s taken some time to settle into our new normal, I’m back and ready to share my passion with you again. Thanks for waiting!
